Tomás Gubbins
(SCL, 1990)
first person.-
I am a Chilean composer, guitarist and improviser working on experimental and improvised music.
My work moves between strings, spaces, and images—often taking shape as graphic scores, where listening becomes a form of seeing (or viceversa).
Collaboration has carried me across continents, connecting me with artists in South and North America, Asia, Europe, and Scandinavia.
BIO
Tomás Gubbins (SCL,1990) is a Chilean composer, guitarist and improviser whose work unfolds in the fields of experimental and improvised music. With a background in chamber, contemporary, and jazz traditions, he has remained a restless artist—constantly exploring sound assemblages and the liminal spaces “in between the musics.”
His practice is particularly drawn to the intersections of image, space, and sound. Currently, he is researching and working with typologies and graphic devices as ways to notate, represent, and frame musical contexts, with graphic scores emerging as both a medium and an outcome of this work. This curiosity has also led him to work as a self-taught designer, creating album covers, posters, and visual identities for projects at the crossroads of music and art.
Open to collaborative and collective processes, Gubbins has worked with a wide range of musicians and artists from Chile, South America, Asia, Europe, and Scandinavia. He has performed in Chile, Argentina, Cuba, Germany, Austria, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, the United States, and England—sharing both his own music and others’, often through ad hoc ensembles and improvisational settings.
Following studies and early experience in Chile, Cuba and U.S.A, he moved to Scandinavia where he currently lives.
